CHAPTER 16

Alessandro

I turned to watch Vivienne sleeping in the master stateroom bed. Her dark hair was fanned out on the pillow, and her hand was pressed against her cheek. There were so many things I wanted to say to her, but I couldn’t tell her all the truths that she needed to know. They would break her. We need to head back to New York and continue our lives.

“Alesso?”

I sat on the bed and stroked her hair.

“How are you?” I asked.

“Sore.”

I smiled. “You slept hard.”

“You fucked me harder.”

“I aim to please. Are you ready to go home?”

“Yes. Can we come back when it’s warm? Maybe we can go for a sail in your boat.”

I laughed. “It’s a yacht, and I, too, would like to spend a few days at sea with you.”

“What happens when we get home?”

“I have some business to take care of in California and Miami.”

“I can go if you like?”

I couldn’t let Vivienne go with me. My business was of the ugly kind, and I didn’t want her to see me in that light.

“I won’t be in either place long,” I said as an excuse. “I have some negotiations which will only take a day or so.”

She sat up. “If you don’t want me to come with you, just say so,” she said with disappointment.

“It’s not that at all. I’ve disrupted your new job enough. Twenty-four hours here and twenty-four hours there, and I’ll be home.”

“What time are we leaving?” she asked, changing the subject.

“Tomorrow morning at eight-thirty. I have a charter.”

“I feel spoiled with all this jet setting.”

I kissed the top of her head. “It’s not jet-setting.”

“In a few days, I’ll be back to the boring,” she said, sounding resigned.

I placed my hand on my bare chest. “I’m boring?”

“I didn’t mean you. I meant my boring life. It was exciting the past few days.”

“Bella, it was dangerous. You were here because it was the best place for you to be protected.”

“I know,” she returned. “I didn’t mean to make it seem like it wasn’t.”

“Remember, if you want to be with me, there is a certain amount of risk.”

She put her hand on my knee. “I understand that, but I’m too far gone.”

I raised one eyebrow. “Too far gone?”

“I’m in love with you, Bello.”

I chuckled. “Picking up some Italian? Maybe we should stay here longer.”

“As much as I say I want to, I can’t. I need to be back for a meeting at work on Thursday.”

“Then we plan for a trip in the summer. I want to show you the mainland and more of the island.”

“I’d like that.”
